learn about soap

Thank you for visiting us at ION Soaps. We would like to tell you more about soap and how it is made. Its very exciting to make handcrafted bath products.

We make many types of soap here at ION Soaps. But do you know what the types are?

Types of Soap:

Cold Process: Cold Process soap is made by combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye, which causes a chemical reaction called saponification. This process is easier to color, swirl, and make more visually stunning bars. However this process takes a longer time to cure; up to 6 weeks.

Hot Process: Hot Process uses an external heat source to bring the soap to gel phase, where it is then poured into the mold. This is contrary to cold process, which does not use external heat; the heat is internally generated during saponification and the soap may or may not go into gel phase. This produces a more rustic looking bar, however colors can be achieved. Most of our bars at ION Soaps uses the Hot Process method.

Liquid: In liquid soap making, you use a different type of lye called Potassium hydroxide (KOH). It takes several staged to complete, but creates soap for many purposes.

Glycerin Soap: Goes through a hot process in which sugar, alcohol, and some extra glycerin are added to the regular soap mixture. The mixture may contain around 15-20% of glycerin and is heated until it reaches a clear, jelly-like consistency.
